A Local Area Network (LAN) is useful for:

• Sharing printers

• Sharing data files

• Backing up data

• Sharing other resources such as a modem with a phone line to Internet, a CD-ROM drive, a scanner, etc.

Discussing LANs in detail is something to be done on a case by case basis. However, a few things are worth mentioning briefly below.

For best reliability, as well as performance, the LAN cabling must be installed properly. This is one field where I've found worksmanship to be consistently shoddy in Thailand.
