Computer Consulting

"There was nothing I could do, it was a computer problem." - Irresponsible manager blaming his problems on the inanimate computer as if he was absolved...

Many managers are not very computer literate. All computer consultants or specialists look the same to them, i.e., they can't tell who is good and who is not. These managers are timebombs to a disaster. Especially in Thailand. However, you can also get reamed by fundamentally bad decisions by computer consultants who recommend systems that are not appropriate for your needs, as well as chronically problematic computer systems. For example, click on this case study.

The founder of ThailandGuru.com has been a self-employed computer consultant since 1987, and attributes his success to giving clients what is appropriate for their needs, and reliability.

There is no substitute for experience in Thailand. Just read the following...

I receive many requests for recommendations for a computer shop. Unfortunately, I got out of computer consulting around 2001. The last time I went to Pantip Plaza, my favorite computer shop for the previous 7 years was gone.

The Pantip Plaza on Petchburi Road is still the biggest place to go. I buy from a shop called Pansonics on floor 3 on the north side (closest to the street). There is one guy there named Cafu who speaks good English and is very knowledgeable. His staff, I don't know. I buy hard disks there. Before, I bought Hitachi because of the 5 year guarantee to get data off, but Hitachi moved some of its operations to China and that guarantee disappeared, so I switched to Western Digital, made in Thailand. I trust Thailand more than China, as Thailand has had vast hard disk manufacturing facilities going back to the early 1980s, and if I need to recover data from a crashed hard disk, it's quicker with a Made in Thailand hard disk.

For data recovery from most any major disk brand and model, one company providing this service is IDR, Inter Data Recovery Co., Ltd., www.idrlab.com , on Bang Na Trad Road, 02-744-1911-2.

I also got computers from Fortune Town on the corner of Ratchadapisek and Rama 9 Road (the side next to Lotus), from a shop on the next to the top level, a big corner shop that displays a wall of monitors. Sorry, I forgot the name. The monitors sold me. When I compare monitors, I don't look at the pictures, I have them run MS Word and Windows Explorer to look at the clarity of text vs. eye strain. Many monitors show beautiful photos but the text isn't so good in ordinary applications.

Since I live in Rangsit, actually, I but mostly in Zeer Rangsit, another large computer bazaar. Future Park has a very small IT section but there's a very good shop with a good English speaking techie owner who runs it day to day, managing staff closely. It's on the top level near NetDesign.

Alternatively, especially for Macintosh computer consulting in Bangkok, I give a strong recommendation to Dave Peterson of www.BangkokMac.com who I have met and gotten to know. Dave is a very good teacher who understands the viewpoint of users at different levels. He is also a very pleasant person, and professional. Dave also has experience in Windows systems and MS Office.

While I was 100% self-employed as a computer, communications, and IT consulting myself from 1987 to 2002, I must say that I don't take on many jobs any more, large or small. I know a lot of good techies, but I don't feel comfortable making referrals without keeping an eye on what's going on. I do management and quality control appropriate to the client's functional needs. Unfortunately, with my other business going as it is, I don't accept much IT consulting for complete strangers, and generally offer this only to people and companies who are using my company for other services, too, in which case I'm happy to take care of your needs. The only things I've done over the past year or so are helping people with their laptops (or desktops) if they bring them to my office or if they're nice, on my beaten path, and can make an appointment.

I suggest you contact Dave above, as I'm confident about him in many ways.
