Domestic Travel in Thailand

"The unexamined life is not worth living" -- Socrates, 399 B.C.

The original Thailand Guru website was a practical guide for helping expats relocating to Thailand to live and work. However, I would also like to cover domestic travel in Thailand for leisure and quality of life. Life is not all about work and school. Experiencing another culture and country is part of understanding humanity, ourselves, and nature on this planet.

There is a whole section of Thailand Guru on history, culture, and language which forms the basis of this. However, travel belongs in another section, as it includes purely scenic parts of the country, in addition to experiencing the culture.

Since 1994, I have traveled to every province in Thailand except a few of the small ones bordering Malaysia (due to the Muslim insurgency), and most provinces multiple times. When I have a destination planned, I try to take a different route than before, including minor highways. (Be careful about this...) Actually, I do this in Bangkok, too.

I go a lot by Google Maps satellite view, looking for interesting places. I've only rarely booked a place to stay in advance. I've usually booked my lodging when and where I feel like it, and often after viewing a few places on site first.

I'm not in a hurry to reach a destination. I enjoy the scenic drives. My wife and I take turns driving, while the other navigates and researches. (I am find reading and working in the car on my phone and laptop, sometimes in the back seat where it's darker and I can better see my laptop screen during the day. I have a mobile, scenic office with nice views.) Other cars pass us. We don't drive in traffic like playing a video game. Actually, we try to avoid traffic and pollution.

The pages in this section are some travel items I've put together, with an emphasis on places which I think are not covered well elsewhere on the web.
